These little fellows were very industrious, perhaps because the birds and caterpillar eating wasps were also out in full force.

Personally, the colonies made me think of the scene in Shrek where Shrek and Fiona were running through the field and Fiona makes a spider-silk-and-bug cotton candy like ogre confection.
