Summer 2004, the boys and I were using sunflowers to find insects and found this fun little beetle. I wanted to get a few more pictures, so we took the sunflower and beetle with us. Once home, I wanted a few pictures with a little insurance that he wouldn't fly away before I got a few pictures -- this was before I had my macro lens. I set up some butcher paper on a kitchen chair and opened the curtains for some natural light. While I was photographing, he took off. I really like the very still elytra (hard outer wings), the blur of the hind wings, the legs splayed out and then the shadow below. 1/950s, focal length 6mm, f/8.0, ISO 160.
